Brachytherapy is a therapeutic method used in curative dedicated localized prostate cancer. Worldwide, practiced frequently by urologists: for over 20 years in the U.S. and approximately 10 years in developed countries in Europe.
The term “brachytherapy (brachy) comes from Greek and is to place radioactive sources very close to or in contact with tissue, and which produced energy to destroy tissue. In brachytherapy for prostate cancer therapy may be the only way or can be used in combination with external irradiation, depending on each patient’s clinical situation.
What is brachytherapy ?
American Brachytherapy Society recommends this procedure for prostate cancer in early stages with a PSA (prostate specific antigen) of less than 10 ng / ml. In combination with external radiotherapy as method, brachytherapy can be used in more advanced stage, when the PSA value is less than 20 ng / ml. In the therapy of localized prostate cancer with brachytherapy using radioactive isotopes: Paladium Iodine 125 and 103. Low dose brachytherapy is a procedure that involves implanting these “seeds” of radioactive size of a grain of rice into the tumors of the prostate gland. Radioactive isotopes – iodine and palladium – are locked in a small shell of titanium. When radiation is released from the “seeds”, the tumor shrinks and is destroyed.
A study in New York has shown that regular use of the club drug ketamine alters the functioning of urinary bladder. The symptoms which often occur are urgency and pelvic pain. The drug is sometimes commonly known as Special K. Dr. Siu-king Mak from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and colleagues said that the symptoms might persist for a period of a year or more even after a person stops taking the drug. Dr. Mak and colleagues have published their findings in Journal of Urology in the August issue. The journal is now available online. In an e-mail sent to Reuters Dr. Mak also said that it is likely that the functional changes which occurred might get reverted in a year or more after the abstinence from ketamine.
Ovarian cysts, as the name clearly indicates, develop in the ovaries of a woman. Basically, these are small fluid-filled sacs that are mostly benign in a majority of cases. However, some of these cysts may be quite painful and even cause problems such as excessive bleeding during menstrual cycle and rupturing.
In such a case, doctors often advise surgical removal of these cysts. However, if an ovarian cyst appears due to changes in menstrual cycle, it is most likely to disappear on its own, without any treatment, within a few months time. In either case, you need to take these cysts seriously and can follow some easy home remedies for Ovarian Cysts along with prescribed medication to dissolve them.
Warts are caused by a virus called the human papilloma virus (HPV). There are over 80 types or strains, and new ones are being identified all the time. Each different strain prefers to grow in certain areas of skin and is rarely found in others.
HPV has been the subject of a lot of confusion and misinformation. When the HPV infects the skin it may cause a wart to grow, but it can be present in the skin without causing warts. Almost all of us will have HPV on some part of our body, but many of us will never have had a wart.
HPV passes from person to person and place to place by skin-to-skin contact. In the genital area most HPV is associated with sexual contact. It was once thought that warts around the anus in children always meant sexual abuse had occurred, but this has been shown not to be so.
Hormone treatment is chosen by physician depending on the type of hormone receptors and their number and age and hormonal status of women (pre-or post-menopause). Hormone therapy is usually indicated after surgery, but it is useful preoperative.
Types of hormonal therapies
Hormonal therapies are currently used in several ways:
- Therapy after which ovarian function blocks – before this is done Ovariectomy (surgical removal of ovaries). Prescription medications in the therapy of ovarian estrogen production blocks.
- Antiestrogen therapy – it blocks the function that records the presence of estrogen receptors. Treatment is done with Tamoxifen.
- Administration of progesterone, a hormone that blocks estrogen receptor affinity.
- Aromatase inhibitors (Aromasin, Aminoglutetimida) – they block the formation of the precursor hormone estrogen synthesis.
If you see your head is scaly, flaky, and looks greasy you need to be more detailed in taking care of your hair daily, as it starts to show the symptom of seborrhoeic dermatitis scalp. In common term, we usually called it as Dandruff. The seborrhoeic dermatitis scalp could also occurs in babies ( cradle cap ). Unaware to most people, this symptom can also happen in other parts of the body such as cheek, face, and chest.
The seborrheic dermatitis scalp has been pretty much common occurs in babies up from 3 months onwards, and adult between 30 and 60. Such dandruff problem seems affect more man than women. The cause seborrheic dermatitis scalp has not been identified yet but some experts suggest that it is related to hormones. Some other experts suggest that the dandruff is caused by fungus called malassezia. The dandruff is causing several disturbances such as itchy feeling. The dandruff also ruins your personal hygiene and appearance because you will always scratch your hair and you have to comb it every time.
Migraine is mainly a neurological disorder or syndrome which is characterized by severe pain in the head. The pain is like an intense throbbing sensation which can even be followed by nausea. Some of the other symptoms include vomiting, dizziness and so on. Migraine is a very common disorder and millions of people across the world suffer from it. Apart from conventional medical therapies, there are also some natural therapies which have proved effective against the disease.
Causes of Migraines
The exact cause of migraine is not really known. However, according to physicians, the complication is mainly caused by some type of spasms which take place in the blood circulating arteries to the brain. Migraines are also caused by stressful and fast lifestyle, lack of proper nutrition and sleep, changes in blood pressure and sugar levels, hormonal imbalance and so on.
What is Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)?
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is caused for vaginal infection. It is sometimes referred to as vaginal bacteriosis. It is generally caused by an inequity of naturally occurring bacterial flora.
What are the symptoms and signs of BV?
The most frequent sign of BV is an irregular homogeneous white vaginal discharge, especially after sex. It has a disagreeable fishy smell. Cases of bacterial vaginosis are uncomfortable as well as painful. If you maintain the following suggestions, you will easily be able to cure Bacterial Vaginosis
- Suitable sanitization: It is essential to clean the vaginal region carefully. You can use a mild cleanser combined with purified water in order to cleanse the zone.
If a person has been detected with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), he has to be extremely cautious and careful. Initially, the person may not be aware of such symptoms and signs. If you undergo multiple sclerosis or see others suffer from this problem, you have to first notice the changes which occur in the first instance. There are various types of treatments available as well. But before proceeding further, let’s have a brief insight on Multiple Sclerosis.
What is Multiple Sclerosis?
It is an autoimmune disease and as a result of this disease, the cells and tissues of the body get affected. The cause of this multiple sclerosis still remains unknown. If the immune system doesn’t act in response generally, it attacks the nerve fibers. The nerve fibers in the optic nerves, brain and spinal cord get affected.
An international team on Tuesday concluded that regular mammograms help in preventing deaths due to breast cancer and the number of deaths prevented increase over a period of time. This study was the longest study conducted on breast cancer screening. A total of 13,000 women were involved in the study, they belonged to two different communities in Sweden. The results observed were that 30% lesser women who were in the screening group died due to breast cancer. The results that were observed persisted for years. Finally after conducting the study for 29 years the researchers concluded that the number of women who were saved due to mammogram increased every year.
It has been found that more than five million children in the US are suffering from asthma. In each year nearly 200,000 of them have been taken into hospital due to severe asthma attacks. In most of the cases, the disease starts before the age of 10. The lung, the chief respirator organ, is by and large affected by this disease. An asthma attack makes the air passages narrower and as a result the muscles around them tighten.
What are the symptoms of Asthma in children ?
Some of the following symptoms are noticed in children suffering from asthma :
- Chronic or recurring cough
- Chest pain
- Shortness of breath
- Sporadic talking
With age, the prostate of a man can grow in size. Without being something abnormal, though sometimes that happens to block the flow of urine. So there are some problems with the prostate that can strike men, especially those older than 40 years:
* Benign prostatic hyperplasia, in which urine flow is restricted and therefore there will need to urinate more often, especially at night;
* Acute and chronic prostatitis in the prostate gland becomes inflamed. It is estimated that 35% of men may experience chronic prostatitis in life and manifest symptoms that are frequent and painful urination, decreased libido or erectile failure;
* Prostate cancer that affects the prostate gland cells and can block urinary flow. It’s early detection and treatment necessary to prevent the extension of cancer cells in other parts of the body.
Researchers at University of London have come up new studies that reveal that the molecular movements can aid in treatment some of the aggressive types of the cancer. It is found that Met, a molecule, is the main reason to trigger and spread cancer as it relocates the negative part of the cell. It is the movement of these molecules from the inner side of the cell to the periphery that could stop the development of the cancer cells and can also lead tumours to shrink. Usually, Met molecules are active in wound healing and embryo formation but are also found in different types of cancers as well like lung cancer, breast cancer etc. Due to the presence of these molecules the cells grow uncontrollably turning into the tumours of highest levels.
About Cervical Cancer
Cervical cancer is a serious chronic disease, with minimal chance of cure if diagnosed in advanced stages. Cervical cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death among women after breast cancer, (…) in the world every two minutes a woman dies of cervical cancer.
Also, it says that by the age of 50 years approximately 80% of women experience an infection with one HPV strains and at 60 months of first intercourse between 67-70% of teens have HPV. They have identified over 100 strains, most of them rated safe and asiptomatice and 15 of these lead to cancer, two to a form of malignant cancer (16, 18) and the rest to a benign form of cancer.”
Together, cancer-causing HPV types 16 and 18 are responsible for 70% of all cervical cancer cases worldwide.
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma begins to develop in the white blood cells called lymphocytes. For reasons unknown white blood cells begin to multiply abnormally, then collects in the lymph nodes and continues to multiply, appearing as a tumor.
Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) is a form of cancer that develops in lymphatic tissue, which is located in various parts of the body: the lymph nodes, spleen, thymus, adenoids, tonsils and bone marrow. For this reason the lymphatic system, an important part of the immune system plays an essential role in defending the body against infection.
Annually, over 1200-1300 persons are diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, this type of cancer being among the top 10 diseases in the world. . Worldwide, approximately 1 million people living with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, but every year 200,000 people die from this disease.
Chemotherapy, surgery and radiation therapy are three words quite common to people suffering from the life threatening ailment known as cancer. Though chemotherapy is popularly known to people, radiation therapy is being widely accepted worldwide today to treat the cancer patients.
The four types of radiation therapies include the conventional and the conformal, the intensity modulated radiation, the ‘stereo tactic’ radio surgery (‘SRS’) and the image guide radiation therapy (‘IGRT’). Conventional and conformal therapy is utilised in simpler cases, wherein the cancer causing cells are removed with use of two beam directions. The ‘IMRT’ or Intensity Modulated Radiation ensures that higher doses are focused on the cancerous cells minimising the side effects.
When the blood flow through the coronary arteries is sufficiently restricted to cause angina, there are two basic ways of helping: either the needs of the heart can be reduced so that and inadequate blood supply becomes adequate, or the arteries themselves can be treated to increase the blood supply. The former method is achieved with medicines and the latter, usually, with surgery.
The medicines work by lowering the hearts needs. They do this by slowing the heart rate, reducing the blood pressure (hence the “resistance” into which the heart has to pump) and also the force with which the heart contracts. There are three groups of drugs which are effective in this way; they are called beta-blockers, nitrates and calcium antagonists. To a minor extent they may dilate narrowed coronary arteries where “spasm” has narrowed them over and above the thickening in the walls.
Irritant contact dermatitis is more common than the allergic type, generally accounting for about 75 per cent of cases. If the stratum corneum (the outer barrier layer) of the skin is visualised as bricks and mortar, then the effect of skin irritants is to destroy the mortar. This then dissolves the stratum corneum and ultimately destroys the whole epidermis (outer skin layer). Initially this causes skin dryness and scaling, but with the triggering of an inflammatory reaction there is progression to redness, itching, and even blistering.
Irritant contact dermatitis may be further sub-divided into acute and chronic types. Acute irritation usually arises from contact with a single, strong chemical such as a cleaning agent. More common is chronic (or cumulative irritant) contact dermatitis. In this case repeated exposure to single or multiple agents combine to damage the skin. These agents can seem innocuous, such as water, soap and detergents, but through their repeated effects on the skin a low-grade irritant contact dermatitis may develop.
Other substances contacted within the home such as laundry detergents, bleach, and sterilising solutions all accentuate the problem. In addition, solvents, oils, greases, dust, fibreglass and wool are all recognised causes of skin irritation. Once dermatitis has occurred, complete recovery may take some time, often months. Even when the hands look normal after an episode of dermatitis, they may take three to four months to recover fully. Until complete recovery the skin will remain susceptible to further irritation.
We are often taught that ‘squeaky clean’ skin is the way to go! In the same way, because the vulva is a moist area where natural fluids are produced and urine and faeces may be present, many women feel that they must apply this ‘squeaky clean’ philosophy even more strictly to their vulvas. I never cease to be amazed and sometimes horrified by what women do to themselves in the mistaken belief that this is a dirty area. If, in addition, they have problems such as itch or discharge, then they think this means they must be dirty with the result that they clean over-zealously. Remember:
– In normal women, vaginal secretions contain bacteria which help to protect us from thrush and other infections. Douching to remove these has no place in routine daily hygiene and is potentially harmful.
– Vaginal secretions don’t build up within the vagina: they constantly, gently seep through the introitus and onto the surface. This not only helps keep the vagina naturally clean, but is important during sexual arousal to make sure lubrication is adequate.
– The tissue of the vestibule is like the tissue of the mouth. You don’t wash your mouth out with soap every day, and in the same way you don’t need to use soap on the vulva. The vestibule is meant to be moist!
People who have been diagnosed with autism or other types of pervasive developmental disorders have a very hard time understanding and processing sensory input.
Lots of children in the United States, as well as throughout the world, are being born with the signs and symptoms of autism. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 20 out of every 1,000 kids was diagnosed with autism last year, which is a nine percent increase from children who were being born with this awful disorder four years ago.
Massage therapy centers are always abuzz with baby boomers seeking to relieve anxiety, tension and the stress of their busy lifestyles. Yet, they keep coming back to be massaged and pampered in their never ending battle to remain youthful and fit. This means spas must carry a cornucopia of massage treatment supplies, like oils, lotions, creams, and bamboo massage tools. This way the spa has something to offer all clients or when boomers decide to try new massage techniques.
It is thought that as many as 42 percent of Americans use alternative medicine to compliment traditional health care. Massage, chiropractic, and yoga are widely used in addition to traditional medicine to relieve stress, depression, sore muscles, and skeletal problems.
